House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made a surprise announcement during a Tuesday morning press conference, revealing the initiation of impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden. This unexpected move represents a shift for the Republican leader, aligning him with conservatives in his party who have long sought to retaliate against Biden following extensive investigations into his alleged misconduct.
"I am instructing our House committees to initiate a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Over the past several months, House Republicans have uncovered substantial and credible allegations concerning President Biden's behavior—a pattern of corruption," McCarthy stated on X, accompanying his statement with a brief video clip of his remarks.
He went on to elaborate, "Through our investigations, we have uncovered evidence that President Biden misled the American people about his awareness of his family's foreign business dealings. Witnesses have testified that the president participated in numerous phone calls and meetings, resulting in substantial financial gains for his son and his son's business partners. We have established that nearly $20 million in payments were funneled to members of the Biden family and their associates through various shell companies."
The evidence of these payments to the Biden family is derived from more than 170 bank records linking Hunter Biden and his business associate Devon Archer to overseas executives from Ukrainian energy firm Burisma, as well as venture capital firms associated with the Chinese communist government and Russian oligarchs who were under investigation. Archer testified before Congress earlier in the summer, confirming that President Biden engaged with these executives by attending dinners, taking their calls, and even composing a letter of recommendation for one executive's daughter.
The investigations into President Biden's conduct have been led by House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) and House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH).
"Even a reliable FBI informant has alleged bribery involving the Biden family," McCarthy disclosed, adding that Biden used his official Office of the Vice Presidency to coordinate media responses with Hunter's business partners in relation to Burisma, a company that was being investigated by a local prosecutor for government corruption. The FBI informant mentioned by McCarthy asserted that Biden, in exchange for a $5 million bribe, pressured Ukrainian officials to dismiss prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who subsequently made public allegations that then-Vice President Biden leveraged the U.S. government's influence to obstruct his investigation into his son's business dealings.
Hunter Biden is currently in negotiations with federal prosecutors regarding a plea deal to resolve charges of false income declarations related to these transactions. President Biden has consistently denied any knowledge of his family's business activities, though a majority of Americans believe he had some awareness and involvement in these matters.
