Friends -
Yesterday in Milwaukee, another workplace turned into a scene of a tragedy. Five people went to work and never came home after they were killed by a recently fired employee at Molson Coors.
People are dead. Families are terrified. An entire community is on edge.
I’m absolutely heartbroken for these Milwaukee families and coworkers. And I’m fed up that this keeps happening when we know there are laws that would save lives.
The House passed a universal background checks bill one year ago today. It has bipartisan support. Yet Trump and McConnell won’t even try to pass it.
For 365 days and counting, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have refused to hold a debate or a vote on the bill.
This bill is not controversial. It has both Democrat and Republican co-sponsors in the House. It’s also something over 90% of Americans agree we need.
However in the year since its passage, nearly 40,000 Americans will have lost their lives to gun violence, including those coworkers and friends who lost their lives yesterday in Milwaukee.
This is unacceptable. We can save so many lives. We can prevent needless tragedy. But only if Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump stop listening to the NRA, and choose courage over inaction.
So we are setting a goal of raising 5,000 donations before the end of the month to give us the resources to renew our pressure on Mitch McConnell to hold a debate and vote on this bill.
Today we feel a lot of frustration. Frustration that our elected officials refuse to act. Frustration that our loved ones are still at risk of being killed by a gun. Frustration that our reach for progress continues to be cut short.
But no matter how frustrated we may get, we can never give up hope. It’s up to each and every one of us to hold our heads high and keep fighting for change. Election Day is around the corner.
Thank you for sticking with me in the fight.
My very best,
Gabby Giffords
