Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer, Republican legislators banned or more tightly restricted abortion in 22 states, far-right judges on federal courts have tried to limit access to medication abortion, and Republicans in Congress have proposed a nationwide abortion ban.

But we can fight back and win.

In all 6 states with abortion measures on the ballot over the past year, voters turned out to support abortion rights—including in my home state of Michigan and in “red” states like Kansas, Kentucky, and Montana. We’re seeing a similar pattern in Ohio right now, and more state-level fights are on the horizon for 2024.

Clearly, abortion justice is a winning issue. The majority of people are in agreement that abortion care is healthcare and a human right.

In order to protect abortion access in more states and in Congress, we need to elect more Democratic candidates who will fight for our right to bodily autonomy and reproductive justice. Many candidates for 2024 elections are currently developing their policy platforms, and they should make abortion rights a priority.
