We believe representation matters, John.
The Hispanic community is projected to become the largest minority group in rural America by about 2025, so we're using our energy and resources to meet that moment.
While Hispanic or Latino candidates have increased 75% in the last twenty years to over 7,000 elected officials, they still make up less than 2% of elected officials nationwide, despite being 18% of the total population.
We can create a more equitable, representative government by helping qualified candidates get their foot in the door through local-level offices – and then build up a whole bench of candidates to make massive progress one rural community at a time.
But funding and support are huge barriers to folks wanting to organize their counties or run for local office. So, that's where Movement Labs steps in.
Invest in rural communities near and far, chip in $3 to support local candidates and rural county parties. With our Contest Every Race program, we are changing the game in two ways:
- Issuing quarterly grants of $500 to rural Democratic party organizations that are rebuilding membership, recruiting volunteers, knocking on doors for local candidates, and rebuilding Democratic infrastructure.
- Identifying, recruiting, and supporting first-time candidates running for small local offices like school board, city council, or county commissioner.
Movement Labs is all about meeting people where they are. And with this innovative program, we're hoping to give a bigger voice to folks in the Latino community and build long-term political power against the far right.
Change can't happen without long-term, sustained investment. If you've been holding out on the sidelines, this is the perfect time to step up and pitch in a contribution of $3 or whatever you can today.
Onward,
Movement Labs
