In Morocco, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck while children and families were asleep this past Friday night. The earthquake and subsequent aftershocks have killed more than 2,900 people and injured thousands more — many of whom remain in critical condition. In Libya, existing political crises and past conflicts have already required humanitarian interventions. With Storm Daniel causing dangerous flash floods this week, the situation in Libya for children and families is more dire than ever. For both countries, critical infrastructure has been harmed, and while the exact number of children who have had their homes destroyed or damaged is currently unknown, it is expected that many people have been displaced and are in need of urgent relief.
In any emergency, children are always among the most vulnerable. So far in Libya, UNICEF is responding by distributing 1,100 hygiene kits, vital medical supplies for 10,000 people and providing essential clothing kits for 500 children. As for Morocco, children represent almost a third of the country’s population, so it’s highly likely that at least 100,000 children have been affected. Initial assessments show that safe water, sanitation and hygiene supplies, shelter, health and food assistance are in high demand. In both countries, more support is likely needed to help children now and in the future.
In the wake of widespread displacement, UNICEF is responding with urgency in Libya and stands ready to deliver immediate relief like shelter, safe water and medical help to children and families in Morocco. With your gift today, you’ll ensure that UNICEF can support efforts to reach children and families with emergency assistance and invest in long-term recovery efforts as these disasters unfold.
Thank you for your timely support,
