Last week, we spoke about Patriot Day and patriotism… now we’ll talk about giving our time,
talents, and treasures through CROP/Hunger Walk activities in the Northville area.

Novi/Northville “CROP” Hunger Walk

CROP Hunger Walks are community-based fundraising events held in cities and towns across
the U.S. and were created to support a global, sustainable response to hunger and poverty.
Know that 25% of proceeds are returned to our local community to fund hunger fighting
efforts.

The “CROP” project began in 1947 when farmers were asked to donate food and seed crops to
assist post-World War II Europe and Asia. The first true CROP Hunger Walks took place in North
Dakota in 1969. Since then, CROP Walk events have been held in hundreds of communities
raising millions of dollars to assist in eradicating hunger and poverty. Northville is proud to be
one of these.

Currently, well over 2,000 communities across the U.S. are part of the more than 13,000 CROP
Hunger Walks each year. More than five million CROP Walkers have participated in the 36,000
CROP Hunger Walks over the last two decades alone.

Hunger is one of the greatest injustices facing our world, and ending hunger is possible in our
lifetime. You can help make it happen. Register for our local Northville “CROP” Hunger Walk to
raise funds and take us one step closer to ending hunger once and for all:

The Northville Community CROP Hunger Walk starts at the Northville Presbyterian Church (200
E. Main St. 48167) on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 1:00 PM.

Everyone can sign up individually or create a team under the Novi/Northville CROP Hunger Walk
on the events.crophungerwalk.org website or just show up and be part of the day’s festivities.

The walk will be on the beautiful Hines Drive pathway with Wayne County Sheriffs assisting in
traffic control. The event will begin just south of the Presbyterian Church and head toward
Hines Drive, with a turnaround before the bridge on 6 Mile Road. With all the construction in
Novi and Northville, the committee decided that this would once again be the safest and most
scenic route.

The Northville CROP Walk will include:
* A fall walk with friends and family of 3.2 miles (the average walk for folks seeking water around the world is 3.7 miles)
* Second annual children’s 1 mile book walk/scavenger hunt with a prize for participants
* Ice cream provided by Custard Time
* Pet Friendly … walk your pet or bring a picture of your pet for the walk. The pet that raises the most funds will receive a gift certificate to Celebrity Pets in Northville.
* Bring your old tennis shoes for recycling

FYI – Monies from the walk are used for projects to assist in global hunger and 25% of all funds stay local at places like Northville Civic Concern, Novi Food Pantry, and The NOAH Project in Detroit, among others. Church World Service requires that participants sign up on-line, however you can collect sponsorship money on-line or in person. Envelopes for collecting funds and promotional materials are provided electronically. Hard copies can also be arranged for pickup. * 9/14 @ 6:30 PM – Emmy-nominated “Death is Not the Answer” will be shown at Northville High School. The film delves into the often-misunderstood world of depression and suicide. Following the film will be an expert panel discussion moderated by Chuck Gaidica. For more info: [link removed]

* 9/20 @ 7:00 PM – Northville District Library Victorian Festival History Seminar. The Mayor will touch on Northville’s Victorian history and have an open Q&A. Link ([link removed])

* Northville’s Parmenter’s Cider Mill, Celebrating their 150^th season (since 1873) – Opened for the season 8/26. A true sign of the advent of Fall. Link ([link removed])

* Concerts every Friday & Saturday at 7:00 PM through October – Downtown.

* Farmers’ Market (7 Mile/Sheldon) – Take in Northville’s Award-Winning Thursday Market through October.

Now let's look back at some of the ways Northvillians have shared their time, talents and treasures for CROP Walk...
The Northville Record had the following comments over the years:

1974 – The Brighton area had the first local CROP Walk this year.

1987 – The first Northville/Novi CROP Hunger Walk took place, with Meadowbrook Congregational taking the lead in organizing. Local businesses helped sponsor the event.

1992 – It was noted that Civic Concern in Northville was one of the recipients of Crop Walk donations, and they have been part of CROP Walk activities ever since.

1997 – The tenth anniversary of the local Northville / Novi CROP Walk was celebrated.

2011 – Ward Presbyterian organized the CROP Walk.

This year, the Methodist Church in Northville (FUMC-Northville) under the leadership of Ann Turnbull, has organized the event working with members of the Presbyterian Church (who are hosting it out of their facility).
