Recent court rulings imply that a handful of states may need to redraw their congressional maps in Democrats’ favor before the 2024 election. Republicans, led by Alabama, are ignoring those rulings in hopes that the conservative Supreme Court will simply overturn them. And some Democrats are left stuck on the sidelines trying to figure out if it makes sense for them to announce campaigns for districts that might not exist come election day.

But not Cobb County Commissioner Jerica Richardson. She decided to take on the Big Lie amplifying congressman in her district, Rich McCormick, now.

Once a Republican stronghold, Georgia has become one of the most critical electoral battlegrounds in the nation in recent cycles. And it has been chaotic.

In 2020, McCormick lost his first race for Congress to Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux by less than 3 points. After Georgia redrew its map for 2022, he won his second campaign by double digits. In 2024? Who knows.

That’s what makes Richardson’s decision so much more impressive. McCormick isn’t just another Republican spouting the Big Lie. He claims he’s a victim.


"No one was hurt by voter fraud more than myself. At the end of the night at the end of the election in 2020, I was told I won the election, that we were 5,000 votes up. And then we were eventually told we lost the election."
Meanwhile, Commissioner Richardson is a civil rights activist who has been organizing communities to flip deep red seats.

Before Richardson, Republicans have controlled the Cobb County commission since the Reagan administration. But along with two other colleagues, Richardson flipped it. Georgia Republicans are so afraid of her that they passed a bill to gerrymander Richardson’s home outside of her current constituency.

Fighting for control of Congress in 2024 can ultimately decide the control of the 2024 presidential vote certification process. That means kicking as many of these election deniers out as possible is crucial to defending our democracy.
