September 12, 2023: Weekly Newsletter | Remembering September 11, 2001 | Attending the 9/11 ceremony at Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, Texas. | 22 years ago, our country experienced a horrific terrorist attack that killed nearly 3,000 innocent American lives. Yet even in the face of our darkest days and humanity’s worst evil, in the days that followed, America united as One Nation – joining together to rebuild. Now, every year, we renew our vow and tell new generations the stories of the heroism, bravery, and American resolve that were displayed that day. This week, we pause to remember those we lost on September 11, 2001, as well as the heroism displayed by our nation’s first responders. My prayer today is that our country would meet today’s challenges with the same manner of compassion, kindness, and trust in the Lord that America so richly displayed back then. | August District Work Period | As many of you know, Congress spent this last month of August in a district work period. It’s a time set aside to meet with constituents and hear directly from the people we represent in our home states for an extended period. I really enjoyed being back in South Texas traveling from the Crossroads to the Golden Crescent and everywhere in between to listen to what folks have been going through and what they would like Congress to address. Far and above, the main thing we heard this month was on the burdens this administration’s economic policies are putting on small businesses. It’s something we absolutely have to address immediately, starting with cutting spending and rolling back the administrative state. Watch the video above that recaps what I did back in TX-27 during the August District Work Period. | Restoring Fiscal Sanity For Future Generations | You may have read in the news recently about a “spending” fight ahead in Congress for September. I want to explain a little about what that is referencing. As we’re all painfully aware, the past several years, Congress has been on a $6 trillion spending spree and left the American people with the bill. That bill has come due, and you and your family are the ones being asked to pay the price through rising cost, taxes, and high inflation. It’s wrong. With $32.7 trillion in debt, if we are going to leave anything for future generations, balancing our budget and reforming our budgetary process to ensure greater accountability has to be our highest priority. This starts with the appropriations process — which is what we’ll be working through this September. Congress needs to pass 12 Appropriations bills that adequately cut spending and make our government work for you, the taxpayer. There has been talk in Washington about circumventing this process, which I will not support. We cannot afford to continue the kick-the-can-down-the-road status quo practices of Washington. Here are some of the things we’re holding the line on getting done: -
End bloated COVID-era spending; -
Secure the border, cease unchecked illegal migration, and stop the flow of human and drug trafficking; -
Halt the unprecedented weaponization of the Justice Department; and -
End the woke policies that are weakening our military. | New VA Clinic Open in Corpus Christi! | The brand-new West Point Road Corpus Christi VA Clinic is now open! Enjoy! | I had an amazing experience going behind the scenes and taking a look at what goes on at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. I got the privilege to be a cadet for a day and saw all the tremendous talent and hard work that goes into making sure we're training the best pilots in our nation-- and it happens right here in our district. Thank you to all the folk who everyday are working to train the worlds best Naval aviators. | Also, congratulations to the graduates of Naval Air Station Corpus Christi’s aviator training program! My team and I were thankful to join them as they officially earned their wings, as well as give a few words about the essential role they play in defending our nation’s freedom. To everyone who earned their wings: congratulations on this momentous day, and thank you for your service. | Rep.
