Team,

Justice Alito has rejected calls to recuse himself from a major upcoming caseā€¦ in which he has an apparent conflict of interest.

In Alito's statement about why he wouldn't recuse from deciding a case in which one of the lawyers published a favorable interview with Alito on the Wall Street Journal editorial page to help salvage his reputation, there's a lot he failed to mention. For example, that same lawyer is also representing Leonard Leo in his refusal to answer questions about the gifts Leo organized for Alito.

So this lawyer is doing double-duty personal cleanup for Alito in full public view. And he's got business before the Court. And Alito says it's fine that he decide the case.

Because the Supreme Court is not held to a binding code of ethics, there's not a lot more the American people can do about this situation.

We're seeing the body in our government that is supposed to be most dedicated to preserving and protecting due process completely throwing due process out the window. Again.

The independence and impartiality of the judiciary are essential pillars of our democracy, but Justice Alito seems happy to set those aside for his own personal gain.

More needs to be done on Supreme Court ethics. This blatant disregard of due process and fair and independent fact-finding is doing harm to the judicial system. Will you consider making a donation to support my re-election so I can do more to implement SCOTUS ethics reform?

We need to ensure the Supreme Court holds itself to the highest ethical principles so Americans can know they're getting a fair shake, and that political insiders and billionaires aren't getting special treatment.

Thank you,

Sheldon Whitehouse
