Socialists are taking on Tacoma City Hall and winning. My four guests today are all good friends and fellow leaders of Tacoma DSA. We're in the midst of a major ballot initiative campaign to win the strongest tenant protections in Washington state, and on the cusp of winning DSA’s first seat on Tacoma City Council for Jamika Scott, a deeply-rooted Black leader and democratic socialist.

In this episode, we tell the story of how Tacoma City Council, on behalf of the landlord lobby, tried to defeat our Tenant Bill of Rights with a watered-down, competing ballot measure – and how we took them to court and won, getting their deceptive measure removed from the November ballot.

We discuss the labor movement’s strong support for our Initiative #1, the debate in labor around Jamika's campaign, and how these fights are positioning DSA to help transform Tacoma city politics in the years ahead.

🔥RAISE THE WAGE RENTON UPDATE! 🔥

📣We have only 1 month left to transfer a MASSIVE $90 million EVERY YEAR from the corporate elite to the working class, especially the most marginalized minimum wage workers! THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO QUALIFY FOR THE BALLOT! 📣

💥WE SUBMITTED FOR THE FEBRUARY ELECTION!💥

  • Recently, we submitted to the City of Renton every signature that has been collected this year to qualify for the 2024 February Special Election
  • Now, King County will process and validate each signature.
  • We submitted an extra 2300 signatures to the batch we submitted in July!
  • To hit our target of 4,000 raw signatures and provide cushion for rejected signatures, we need to collect another 1,700 signatures!

HOW MUCH TIME DO WE HAVE LEFT?⏰

  • It depends on how long it takes the county to validate all of our signatures.
  • If we don't have enough (which we probably still will not), they'll give us a 10-day window to submit another batch of signatures.
  • Last time they took 18 days, but we suspect they might move a little bit faster this time around.
  • Our best guess is that including the 10-day window, the FINAL DEADLINE will be sometime between September 20th and September 27th!

📝 SAVING SIGNATURES! 📝

  • Can't make it down to Renton? Want to help out remotely? We have a plan for you!
  • Signatures are invalidated because signatures don't match the voter file, signers weren't registered to vote, or a signer's signature expired!
  • We have a team of volunteers contacting these folks and working with them to save those signatures!

What should I bring to a canvass?

  • Now that we’re door knocking more often, make sure to bring some water, sunscreen, comfortable clothes, and snacks!
  • If you can, bring a friend! Bringing one extra canvasser can DOUBLE your output!!
