NYIC Introduces Municipal Voting Bill to Enfranchise Immigrant New Yorkers

2020 is going to be a big year—here in New York, NYIC kicked it off with the introduction of bold legislation ([link removed]) to let our local government know that immigrants refuse to be silenced and excluded from our political system. On January 14, in partnership with United Neighborhood Houses, we introduced the “Our City, Our Vote” bill to the New York City Council. Nearly 900,000 New Yorkers with green cards and work authorizations, who live, work, go to school, and raise families here, will gain the right to vote with the passage of this legislation.

Already, the bill has the support of over 27 council members, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Brooklyn Borough President Adams, Manhattan Borough President Brewer, and a coalition of over 50 organizations. It’s time for New York City to expand municipal voting rights and make our democracy stronger and more inclusive for the immigrants who are essential to the cultural and economic fabric of our great city.

NYIC Introduces Bill to Guarantee Immigrants a Right to a Lawyer

On January 15, 2020, New York became the first state in the nation ([link removed]) to introduce legislation that would guarantee all immigrants have access to a lawyer when facing deportation. In criminal courts, the Sixth Amendment guarantees a right to counsel—but because immigration courts are civil, immigrants are not guaranteed that same right. We’re making it a top priority to pass the Access to Representation Act to empower immigrants to protect themselves and their families from the Trump Administration’s deportation machine.

NYIC Hosts Convening to Get Out the Count in Upstate NY

With just 8 weeks until Census day, the countdown to the 2020 Census is well underway. Without a fair and accurate count, New Yorkers across the state risk losing vital federal dollars used to support communities and fund education, infrastructure, and healthcare. On January 12, we held aCensus Convening in Syracuse ([link removed]) to share best practices and resources with local organizations to guarantee that historically undercounted populations are represented in the Census. Public Charge Rule Goes Into Effect on February 24
On January 27, the Supreme Court upheld Trump’s racist public charge rule, meaning that immigrants who use certain programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, and subsidized housing assistance on or after February 24th could have their applications for green cards or visas denied. Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project Fights for Equal Access to Education

Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project ([link removed]) is a youth membership based organization serving newcomer and young adult Haitian immigrant students in New York City who are English Language Learners (ELLs) between the ages of 14 to 21. Flanbwayan has been a leading member of the NYIC Education Collaborative ([link removed]) and a vital partner in our fight to support young adult multilingual learners and English language learners, who have the highest dropout rates amongst New York’s student population.
Flanbwayan has pioneered innovative, participatory action research to promote creative social changes through collaboration, reflection, and engagement of directly affected communities to advance their own political and educational development. Their direct support of young students and advocacy to improve and increase access to education has been essential to empowering young immigrants across New York City.
