In January 2021, the Illinois legislature passed the Pretrial Fairness Act. This historic legislation restores the presumption of innocence and makes Illinois safer by ending money bond and the unconstitutional practice of caging people pretrial simply because they cannot afford to pay for their freedom. The law is scheduled to go into effect next week on September 18.
It is hard to overstate how important of ending cash bail is to progressive justice reform, and our hope is that other states will soon follow Illinois’s lead.
