John, In the wake of the high turnout of voters during the 2020 election, a number of state legislatures across the country began to introduce laws intended to suppress the vote. SB 1 in Texas was among the harshest and most sweeping of these new laws. The law was designed to suppress votes from Texans of color and other marginalized communities by targeting their ability to register, to vote by mail, and to vote in person. SB 1 shut down 24-hour and drive-through voting, limited voters’ ability to obtain physical and language assistance, established a “number matching” system that deprived qualified voters from voting by mail where they provide two different but accurate identification numbers on their mail-in ballot forms, allowed counties not to alert voters if their ballot is allegedly defective, and implemented monthly voter roll purges. The law also greenlit voter intimidation through the efforts of partisan poll watchers. That’s why I’m standing before the US District Court in San Antonio, Texas today with our co-counsel and other voting rights legal advocates, fighting on behalf of Mi Familia Vota and Texas voters to ensure that everyone has the right to an equal vote in the Lone Star State. Our team is ready to take on Governor Greg Abbott and state election officials who are determined to suppress voters of color by any means necessary. It is a calculated effort to disenfranchise voters that, if allowed to stand, will unconstitutionally burden qualified voters and inevitably prevent many voters from lawfully casting their ballots in future elections. You can read more about the legislation and our lawsuit here. We can’t let that happen.
