Dear John,
Twenty-two years ago, our nation – and the world – changed forever.
In trying to explain that day to our daughters, I've found it difficult to capture what we were all feeling: grief, fear, confusion, but also solidarity.
For some people like my husband Matt, the course of action was clear: his first call was to a military recruiter to enlist as a Marine and fight for his country.
For others, solidarity took a different shape: reaching out to friends and family in New York and D.C., passing the hat to support survivors, and proudly flying the American flag from every flagpole we could find.
The whole country was united. We weren't red or blue – we were Americans.
People put aside their differences in service of something bigger than themselves. When we saw our nation under attack, we found a way to work together.
It's that same spirit that inspired me to run for Congress.
On January 6th, I watched armed insurrectionists invade the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to subvert American democracy. And later that night, I watched Rep. Jack Bergman vote to overrule American democracy.
I'm not running for Congress to play partisan politics or because I want to be a politician; I'm running because our democracy is still under attack, and as an American, I feel a sense of duty to defend it.
The truth is, if we want to save our country, we need to re-learn how to identify as Americans over Republicans or Democrats.
It's going to take all of us to keep this country together.
We managed it twenty-two years ago. Now, we need to do it again.
So today and every day, we remember the lives of those lost to us on September 11, 2001. We remember the sacrifices of first responders, everyday civilians, and our armed forces who gave everything to help their neighbors and defend this nation.
And we remind ourselves of the hard work ahead – so that the American experiment can continue, even in the face of grave threats.
Thank you, and Never Forget.
Tuebor,
-Callie
