This week at CBPP, we focused on health, housing, state budgets and taxes, federal taxes, food assistance, and the economy.

  • On health, Aviva Aron-Dine warned that Medicaid “block grant” guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will likely encourage states to undermine health coverage. Judith Solomon cautioned that a proposed Medicaid financing rule could jeopardize health care for millions of Americans. Hannah Katch pointed out that Wisconsin is imposing the nation’s harshest Medicaid premiums on people in poverty. We also updated our Sabotage Watch tracker on the Trump Administration’s efforts to undermine the Affordable Care Act.

  • On housing, Peggy Bailey commented that we need rental assistance and services, not punitive policies, to end homelessness. Alicia Mazzara pointed to findings that the rental housing affordability crisis is worst for the lowest-income families.

  • On state budgets and taxes, Elizabeth McNichol noted that although some states are taxing wealth and high incomes better, more progress is still needed.

  • On federal taxes, we celebrated Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day, a time to bring attention to the EITC and other refundable tax credits to encourage more eligible taxpayers to claim them.

  • On food assistance, we updated our report reviewing state government SNAP websites.

  • On the economy, we updated our backgrounders on the post-Great Recession economy and on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
