Friends -

One year. 365 days.

That’s exactly how long it’s been since House passed H.R. 8 — a universal background checks bill with bipartisan support. My bill in the Senate is its companion legislation.

This legislation has been sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk for exactly a year, and in that time, nearly 40,000 people have lost their lives to gun violence.

With each passing day and with each new shooting, the blood soaks deeper and deeper into the hands of the national leaders who choose to do nothing.

It is time for Mitch McConnell to schedule a debate and vote on this issue. I need your help to demand action.

Tell Mitch McConnell to schedule a debate and vote on my universal background checks legislation. Send a message that this cannot wait any longer.

Background checks may still be controversial in Congress, but there is virtually no controversy among the people we represent. Over 90 percent of Americans support it.

Closing that chasm between those two realities is how we win. And that is what our movement to end gun violence and save lives is trying to do.

My Senate colleagues know full well that this piece of legislation will save lives, and I believe that if this bill comes to the floor of the Senate then it will pass. No question.

We need a debate and a vote. Now. It’s time to get every senator on the record on this issue.

Tell Mitch McConnell to schedule a debate and vote on my universal background checks legislation. The American people will not wait any longer.

Democrats ran on gun safety in 2018 and 2019, and we won major victories both years. It was one of the top issues for voters at the ballot box, and now it is time for Congress to listen to the American people.

It’s time for action.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
