Friend, I want to talk to you about my first election that you definitely haven't heard of: Senior Class President of Hillcrest High School. 

My running mate, Alan, and I played on rival YMCA teams when we were kids, but we learned to work together. That's politics, right?

The local newspaper even called this race a "humdinger," and my principal said it was the most competitive school election she'd ever seen! 

Our campaign "strategy" meant showing up to school early and rigging up a karaoke machine so we could serenade students from atop a Toyota Land Cruiser and passing out lollipops with our campaign slogan.

Campaign strategy has changed a lot in the last 23 years, friend, and the halls of Congress are a lot different than the halls of Hillcrest. Back then, the spending limit was $20 per candidate – but Ted Cruz's last Senate race cost over $140 MILLION.

Reaching voters is no longer as simple as catching kids before homeroom. I've got to travel to every corner of the largest state in the continental U.S. and get ads on the air in some of the country's most expensive media markets.
