Dear John,
Oftentimes, the media talks about elections as a personality contest or a game show, forgetting what’s really at stake.
I’m sorry to say that what’s really at stake is nothing less than the future of organized human life.
Yet another UN report shows that countries are failing to meet their commitments, and the world is on track to breach 1.5C of warming in the near term without immediate action.
“There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all,” the report said. |
This comes as Hong Kong Floods with 6 Inches of Rain in One Hour, as 40 are dead in Brazil from flooding, as 18 are dead from flooding in the Mediterranean, as 380 Remain Missing in Maui, and as our country braces for the impact of Hurricane Lee.
Too often, our choices are between Republicans who openly deny the existence of climate change and Democrats who talk and talk about the climate crisis while continuing our fossil-fueled road to catastrophe.
Biden has continuously refused to declare a national Climate Emergency. While I welcome his cancellation of oil and gas drilling leased in the Alaskan Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Biden still refuses to block the Willow Project – often described as a ‘carbon bomb’ – which he approved earlier this year despite widespread objections from environmentalists and Indigenous activists and his own promises for no more drilling on federal lands.
I would declare a national Climate Emergency on day one of my presidency, and I would actually stop fossil fuel drilling on federal lands. I would also fight for Green New Deal programs to shift our energy system away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy.
We have no more time left for anything short of urgent action. Let's do it – for ourselves and for our children's children. |
