John,
Every year, millions of tons of plastic pellet pollution finds its way into our rivers, lakes, and oceans, damaging our environment and irreparably harming ecosystems across the country.

Plastic pollution in our waterways is an urgent problem in need of an urgent solution. Preserving the health of our planet isn’t an option, it’s a must. That’s why I introduced the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act, an initiative that will require the U.S. EPA to prevent the release of plastic into waterways from facilities that use or transport plastic pellets.
Here in our region, significant plastic pollution has been recorded at all five of the Great Lakes. More than 250,000 tons of plastic pellets are estimated to make their way to our oceans on an annual basis. This is not a political issue, and it’s certainly not something we can afford to ignore.
Our environment isn’t just a beautiful backdrop for our busy lives. It’s the air we breathe and the water we drink. It’s a precious resource that sustains us and all life on Earth. But it's also under threat of irrevocable damage from pollution, the climate crisis, and other human-caused harm.
I’m working alongside the Democratic Senate majority to stop pollution, protect our environment, and respond to the climate crisis before it’s too late. Meanwhile, a GOP presidential candidate is calling the climate crisis a hoax while Republicans in Congress try to block meaningful progress.
Together, we can save our planet. Our children and grandchildren are counting on us to do it.
My best,
Dick Durbin
