When I came out in college, I already knew I wanted to pursue a career in public service, but I feared that living my authentic life openly might prevent me from exploring the field of my dreams.

Seeing the courage of others in the LGBTQ+ community who came out, lived their truth, and were public about who they are and who they love, I realized that I didn’t have to choose one or the other. I could run for office and be true to myself.

That’s exactly what I did, and eventually I became the first openly gay Senator in our nation’s history. This isn’t a role I take lightly. I’ve worked hard every day since to make a real difference in people’s lives, like protecting same-sex marriage through the Respect for Marriage Act.

But, despite all of our hard won progress, extreme Republicans are working overtime to institute a wave of legislation designed to roll back LGBTQ+ rights. We must fight back.
