Friend, today is World Suicide Prevention Day — a day for each of us to create hope through action by ensuring that all young people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, are provided with safe, accepting, and supportive environments at home, at school, and in their communities.

The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ young people (ages 13-24) in the U.S. seriously consider suicide each year.

While LGBTQ young people aren't inherently at risk simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, the daily mistreatment and stigma they endure can heighten the risk of suicide. Identifying specific risk factors doesn't necessarily mean someone is contemplating suicide, but it's crucial to be educated to keep more young people safe.

It can be incredibly difficult to talk about suicide with loved ones, but these conversations can truly save lives. We have assembled a guide to help you recognize the warning signs ([link removed]) , understand the risk factors ([link removed]) , and start the conversation. We encourage you to share it with everyone — in many cases, one accepting adult can reduce the likelihood of an LGBTQ young person attempting suicide.

Keep an eye out for a special announcement from The Trevor Project later this month recognizing this year's Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year!
