In 2021, I organized with Robin Wonsley for Minneapolis City Council in Ward 2. Her campaign stood for so many of the ideas I deeply believe in and want for my community here: racial justice, rent stability, and transit equity. (Learn more about Robin via TakeAction’s endorsements page!) We knew it was going to be a tight race. We were running a care-forward campaign in a ward that had been electing the same council representative for many years.
On the final day of the campaign – Election Day – we decided to shift our focus from re-knocking single family homes to knocking more student apartments. Ultimately, our team signed up 21 more young people to vote that day and brought them to the polls. Robin won her race by 13 votes. Thirteen. That was the margin of victory that led Robin, in her first term on City Council, to win safety improvements to public housing, and, for the first time ever, public engagement sessions to inform police contract negotiations.
I hold these wins close to me because I know they take years of organizing and investment. Sometimes, they come down to the final vote. That is why we need year-round investment. Donate $20/month to sustain our movement. In solidarity, Laura Kiernan (she/her) Fundraising Specialist |
