The Hypocrisy of the "Pro-Life" Party
=====================================
Hey there, y'all - I wanted to update you on some of the rhetoric you may hear over the next few weeks, specifically, with the spike in cases of Covid compared to the language around abortion.
###"My body, my choice"
Prominent figures in the GOP - those like **Ted Cruz, Marjorie Taylor Greene,** and **J.D. Vance**- are already on a tirade against Covid precautions. They characterize masks and vaccines as a part of "personal choice" and "freedoms." They insinuate that utilizing these precautions in schools somehow damages children and takes away from their freedom of choice. ***Do you see the irony yet?***
During the initial rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines, many on the right co-opted the language around abortion care, using the **"my body, my choice"** as an argument against the vaccine and other measures to slow the spread of the virus. Not only did they twist data and figures to benefit their view, but they intentionally spread disinformation about the virus to pander to the former President and his cavalier attitude towards the pandemic. **They also floundered on whether the virus was*****even real*****and if it was some convoluted ploy by the government to control us, delving into conspiracy theories and misleading the public for a political narrative. **
###Pro-life for which lives?
**People died from this virus - over one million Americans, and over six million were hospitalized.** Were the majority of those people elderly or had a pre-existing condition? The evidence tells us that is probable, but that would mean that the "pro-life" party sees those people as a statistic, not people deserving of "life." The "pro-life" party has, since the early days of the pandemic, preached that most Americans shouldn't worry about the virus and that "healthy people" don't need to fret. **So "unhealthy people," those with disabilities, pre-existing conditions, or co-morbidities, are not a part of their concern. They, apparently, are not worthy of the same fervent protections the GOP applies to a zygote. **
**And what about the children that died from this virus?** Were they simply too inconvenient to recognize as a part of the statistics? Were they not central to the Republican crusade to "defend our children?" Republicans are adamant about protecting life and babies and the "soul" of the country until real people are dying from real viruses.
**The idea of "life" and the*****religious context*****that they apply to it is their guiding principle.**
**Not protecting living, breathing children from gun violence, poverty, starvation, or homelessness. **
**Not even suggesting the bare minimum - a piece of fabric over the face - to aid in controlling a virus. **
**And now we are back to the same frantic and disingenuous arguments against public health measures, all thanks to the "pro-life" party. **
