John,
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has a plan for the United States Postal Service -- but it’s a plan to increase prices and slow down delivery while reducing services and personnel.
In other words, we will pay more for worse service. It’s all part of his infamous 10-year plan to privatize the USPS, which would end this cherished public service founded in 1775 by Benjamin Franklin that has brought us together as citizens for more than two centuries.
Hardly surprising, considering that DeJoy has cut over 30 million hours of postal worker staffing in the past year alone. Two thirds of rural mail carriers have seen drastic cuts in pay, and some have died due to heat-related illnesses after delivering the mail in record breaking heat, in trucks with no air conditioning.
What is the key to DeJoy’s staying power, a holdover from the Trump administration, now serving under President Biden despite radically different views on the nature and purpose of the Postal Service? The key is that the Postmaster General serves not at the pleasure of the President, but under the USPS Board of Governors, and only they can fire DeJoy.
Currently, however, the USPS Board has two “holdover” members, allies of DeJoy, nominated by Trump, whose terms have officially ended, but have not yet been replaced. This is where President Biden comes in: he has the authority to replace these two holdovers, and he should do so now.
Sign and send a message to President Biden: Nominate two new members to the USPS Board of Governors needed to fire Louis DeJoy, and expand postal services.
Local newspapers are also victims of DeJoy’s 10-year plan, as the USPS recently raised the cost of delivering publications by 33%. In an industry already on the ropes due to competition from cable news, digital outlets, and social media, many local papers will not be able to survive these increases and will be forced out of business.
To oust DeJoy, we must have a USPS Board of Governors that is willing to do just that and work towards saving one of our most beloved institutions. President Biden must make sure the next two nominations to the Postal Board of Governors will be willing to fire DeJoy and understand that the USPS has always been, and should remain, a cherished public service.
Please tell President Biden to fire DeJoy and save the USPS by sending your message now!
Thank you for helping preserve our federal post office, through wind, rain, sleet and hail!
