For years, Democrats had a major advantage with grassroots fundraising — but during the Trump administration, Republican operatives created their own small-dollar donation processing platform.

Now, candidates like Ted Cruz can fundraise from their own ideologically committed, far-right grassroots donor base — in addition to the majority of funds he still gets from major campaign contributors.

Democrats wouldn’t have flipped the Senate majority in 2020 or defended it in 2022 without grassroots support. And we don’t stand a chance of defending our majority next year if online donations let up.
