We are happy to look back at the 2023 International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) held last Saturday. It's a worldwide initiative dedicated to vulture conservation and awareness, with about 90 organizations participating this year. As part of our ongoing mission to promote vulture appreciation and involve the public in their protection, we continued our regular awareness efforts while adding some excitement with a fun quiz and an Instagram giveaway.

Every year, over a thousand participants, including experts and volunteers, venture into the European mountains to count Bearded Vultures in the wild during the International Observation Days (IOD).

In 2022, 1161 volunteers monitored 723 sites, spotting 638 Bearded Vultures, resulting in population estimates:
  • Alps: 288-377 individuals
  • Massif Central: 6-13 individuals
  • Aude in French Pyrenees: 12-22 individuals
  • Spain: ±2 in Maestrazgo and 35-65 in Andalusia and Rioja.
Get involved in Bearded Vulture conservation by joining this year's International Observation Days on 14 October. Experts will lead monitoring sessions that are open to all.

Collecting data during IOD is crucial for European efforts to protect and revive Bearded Vulture populations, helping scientists understand their habitat and survival rates, guiding reintroduction projects for a brighter future.
