Hi John,

I’m Sarah Lane, Jane Fonda Climate PAC’s new Executive Director. I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little about myself.

I’m the daughter of two civil rights activists from the South. My mom worked on voting rights in Mississippi and my dad organized in Selma. I learned from my parents about fighting for what is right, no matter who or what is standing in your way.

So, like my parents, I went into activism. I focused my attention on elections. I truly believe (and still do) that if we elect candidates who will fight for what is right, we can make a real difference in the world.

My first job on the campaign trail was helping elect Jeff Merkley to the U.S. Senate. Most people didn’t think Merkley could pull out a victory back in those days. But we worked hard, we hit the pavement to reach voters, and we won. I went on to work for Sen. Merkley for many years in the Senate and on his campaign. It’s one of my proudest moments – to have been part of the team that elected one of the Senate’s biggest climate champions.

But I’m not done yet. Our planet is in real trouble. I have seen firsthand how the climate crisis has changed the Pacific Northwest. The good ol’ days of it being rainy and cloudy nine months out of the year are gone. We have longer, hotter, and more destructive wildfire seasons. We’ve experienced heat domes with temperatures in Portland, Oregon of 116 degrees. We’ve seen decimated salmon populations, green algae blooms, and invasive species.

So when I heard that Jane Fonda was looking for an Executive Director to help elect climate champions across the country – I knew I had to go for it.

I never thought in a million years that I’d be working alongside Jane Fonda in the climate battle, but here I am! Jane’s fearless advocacy and commitment to the climate movement inspire me every day.

I am ready to get to work! We are scaling up our campaign to elect climate champions at all levels of government. We will be launching a pilot neighbor-to-neighbor field program to get out the vote. And we’re going to take on Big Oil to prevent them from drilling for oil near schools, homes, and businesses.
