Weekly Newsletter: Congress is up against the wall trying to avoid yet another government shutdown. Thanks to the rise of partisan politics, it’s a script that’s become far too common.

Hi Friend,

Every autumn, two things are almost certain: the return of football and pumpkin spice. There's a third "tradition" we could do without – the looming threat of a government shutdown.

Earlier this year, the debt ceiling crisis gave us a scare. We hoped it would be a wake-up call for lawmakers to put an end to fiscal recklessness. Yet, here we are again, staring down the barrel of another possible government shutdown ([link removed] ) because Congress can't agree on a budget.

Let's be clear: government shutdowns are a national embarrassment, and they’re a waste of your hard-earned money. A Senate subcommittee found ([link removed] ) that three shutdowns between 2013 and 2019 cost taxpayers nearly $4 billion. That's not even counting the other setbacks like construction delays and halted investigations.

Some partisans may weaponize shutdowns as part of their political strategy, but the majority of Americans – folks like you and me – want Congress to stop the bickering, pass a budget, and keep the government running. After all, that’s one of the first responsibilities assigned to Congress in the Constitution.

Over 10 years ago, No Labels put forward a simple fix: "No Budget, No Pay." If Congress can’t pass a budget on time, they shouldn't get paid until they do. This isn’t a new idea; it’s a common-sense policy we’ve been championing for years, and it’s part of our Common Sense policy booklet ([link removed] ) published in July.

We're taking a stand for responsible governance, but we can't do it without your help. Your financial support is crucial for turning these common-sense ideas into action.

Can you chip in $25, $50, or even $100 today to No Labels 2024 ([link removed] ) ? Every dollar helps us build a movement for America's commonsense majority.

No Labels is making history, and we want you to be part of it! We're working hard to build the launching pad for a potential independent Unity presidential ticket – featuring one Democrat and one Republican – in 2024. Forces within the two major parties have already registered their objections to this project, but they're only displaying a disconnect with how the country feels.

No Labels 101 is an introduction call into everything we are working on and how it all works together.

Five Facts on National Party Conventions ([link removed] )

Next summer, both Democrats and Republicans will host their 2024 national conventions. While today’s conventions are largely scripted affairs, they have historically been more freewheeling with often unexpected outcomes.
