Friends,

Trans rights are human rights.

For far too long, members of the transgender and gender non-conforming community have been the target of policies that fail to acknowledge their basic human rights.

Donald Trump’s administration has been targeting and eliminating laws that protect transgendered people:

*
They eliminated health-care protections for individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community. That policy allows healthcare workers to discriminate against transgender patients, and refuse treatment.

*
Trump proposed federal civil rights laws that redefine gender in strictly biological terms, failing to protect transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

*
The administration reinstated the ban on transgender men and women openly serving in the military, despite the fact that recent studies show that about one-fifth of all transgender adults are veterans.

Our country is facing an epidemic of trans-violence, from the top down.

In the last year alone, advocates recorded at least 22 deaths of transgender or gender non-conforming people in the U.S. All but one were people of color.

This a national crisis that demands the attention of every American.

I believe that every single person -- regardless of their gender or racial identity -- should be able to feel safe in their home or in a public space. We must keep fighting back against any attempts to target our transgender and gender non-conforming neighbors.

We cannot stop until the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness applies to all people -- including our friends in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Trans rights are human rights, and when I’m Senator, I will fight like hell to protect those rights.

In Solidarity,
