We’ve been paying close attention to the upcoming special election in Utah’s second Congressional district. This election is happening in November 2023 and is an important preview of what’s in store for 2024.

We’ve been praising Utah Democrats for uniting behind their nominee, Kathleen Riebe, early at convention, skipping a contentious and expensive primary. It’s a risky strategy — strong primaries make strong candidates — but we applaud the gumption in an uphill battle like this. While Republicans have been busy duking it out in a contentious three-way race, Riebe has been able to get ready for her opponent by raising money and organizing her community without any distractions.

This week, we finally found out who that opponent will be: Trump loyalist and congressional staffer Celeste Maloy.

Celeste Maloy is precisely the kind of ultra-MAGA 147 wannabe congressional candidate we’re committed to defeating. Her boss, outgoing Congressman Chris Stewart, whose resignation triggered the special election, was the only member of the Utah delegation who supported the January 6th insurrection by voting to overturn the 2020 election. Her closest rival in the Republican primary was anti-Trump, anti-January-6th, and she lost the nomination because of it.

Celeste Maloy thinks Trump’s indictments are politically motivated. She cannot be allowed to serve in Congress when the 2024 presidential election is being certified. We have to defend our democracy and end her treasonous political career NOW.
