27th Annual Race Against Hunger 5K

JOIN US FOR THE 5K THAT STRENGTHENS FOOD ACCESS ACROSS PHILADELPHIA

We're just three weeks away from our biggest event of the year! For 27 years, the Race Against Hunger 5K has elevated the issue of food insecurity here in Philadelphia, where the rate of food insecurity is 4% higher than the national average. Our annual 5K supports our work to sustainably and collaboratively address food insecurity across the Philadelphia region while providing a platform for local community food programs to do the same, and this year we're working with nearly 40 food programs for widespread impact throughout our local communities!

If you won’t be joining us this year, please consider making a donation to support our work to ensure all Philadelphians have the food they need to live healthy lives

Volunteer for the Race Against Hunger

To make this year's Race Against Hunger a success, we need a crew of volunteers! Not walking or running the 5K but want to get involved? We invite you to volunteer your time on Saturday, September 30th at the Navy Yard to help us with with registration, packet pickup, water distribution, set up, clean up, and more!

Share Your SNAP Experience

Share Your Experience With SNAP

We want to hear directly from individuals with experience applying for and/or getting SNAP benefits in order to understand the positives and negatives of the program, as well as hear suggestions for how it could be improved.

With the Farm Bill reauthorization ongoing, it's critical that SNAP be protected from additional restrictions, and we know there are many ways to improve the program. Your experience can help!

We are asking participants to:

  1. Participate in a short call with a member of the Coalition Against Hunger staff to go over the project.
  2. Come to the Coalition Against Hunger’s office at 123 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia PA for a 1 hour pre-arranged interview about your experience with SNAP.

Policy and Advocacy

The State of Food Insecurity in Pennsylvania

Despite a modest improvement in the percentage of households with children who skipped meals, there were many ways in which families reported struggling at higher rates compared to last August. For example, 55% of all surveyed households ate less due to budget constraints, up from 40% last August.

SNAP Hotline In Action

A mother with three children called our SNAP Hotline for help finding food pantries and to ask if her family was eligible for SNAP benefits. She didn't speak English, but when she found out about our translation services, she gave us a call. With the help of an interpreter, we were able to call her back and provide assistance. The parents hadn't had their green card for at least 5 years, so they were not eligible for SNAP benefits, but their children were eligible. Our Hotline Manager completed an application for the children, and the benefits were approved. They will now get $740 in SNAP benefits each month, which was a huge relief for this family.
