Right now, we continue to feel the impacts of the climate crisis including intensified heat, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. To address the climate crisis right now, we must profoundly and immediately cut down on our greenhouse gas emissions. With the effects of climate change and air pollution worsening every day, we can’t afford to just tap on the brakes.

The transportation sector in the U.S. is the largest contributor of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, in the nation. To address transportation pollution in this country, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released updated Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards–a major opportunity to slash emissions coming from our tailpipes. And we have the opportunity to encourage the NHTSA to adopt these standards right now.

Under the newly proposed standards, automakers must boost fuel efficiency in passenger cars and light-duty vehicles. These boosts could prevent more than 900 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions–the equivalent of taking over 233 million vehicles off the road. Additionally, updated standards would save 88 billion gallons of gas through 2050, putting $50 billion back in our pockets.

Now is our chance to shape our climate future. The NHTSA is accepting public comments on the standards right now, and you can submit one today in support of slashing our tailpipe pollution.
