Legislative Update
School started for students, teachers, and school staff across the state this week. We also learned this week that in response to a poorly-planned law passed by the majority party last session, the St. Cloud police department will end their school resource officer (SRO) program.
This has happened in cities and counties all over Minnesota recently. The new law changes what SROs are allowed to do in aggressive or violent situations, taking away tools they can use to keep students and teachers safe. The law also leaves SROs still in schools at risk for legal action if they misapply the new policy, which is unclear and has raised many questions by both school staff and police departments.
Police departments, schools, legislators, and local governments across the state have called for clarification on the new law, and both House Republicans and the Star Tribune's editorial board have called for a special session to fix the law. I support a special session to address the problems brought up by schools and law enforcement, so we can get SROs back into St. Cloud schools. I will continue advocating for the safety of students, teachers, and school staff.
I have heard from many of you with concerns about this issue. Please continue to contact your local legislators to voice your concerns.
District Visits
Last week I toured the 180 Degrees youth shelter being built in St. Cloud and heard a little more about their mission and phase 3 of the construction project. Thank you to Dan Pfarr and Dominic Jones for showing me around and talking to me about 180 Degrees!

I also had the opportunity to speak with representatives from Anna Marie's Alliance, a women's domestic violence shelter in St. Cloud. This group has an incredibly important job, ensuring that women who need emergency help in our community can get it. Thank you to Executive Director Charles Hempeck, Program Director Stacey Kloek, Holding Hope Manager Mindy Thomes, Communications and Development Director Lori Eich, and staff for speaking to me about the group and the important work they do in our community every single day.
