** Labour Day Marks End of Summer
for Building Trades

Today is the LAST day of government consultations on the Investment Tax Credits for green technologies first introduced in the 2022 Fall Economic Statement and the 2023 Federal Budget.

This week, I have an op-ed out in the Daily Commercial News on how prevailing wage will benefit all skilled tradespeople during Canada's transition to a net-zero economy. Read it here ([link removed]) . There are some groups arguing against prevailing wage, so we need your support now.

Show your support by adding your name to our letter to the government ([link removed]) asking them to follow through on their commitment to implement the Investment Tax Credits and the good labour conditions that are attached to them.

** Labour Day
------------------------------------------------------------
Labour Day is an important day for the Building Trades as we celebrate our Brothers and Sisters, the work they do, and our long history. Across the country, parades, picnics, and other events took place last weekend to mark Labour Day. CBTU held a joint BBQ with UA Local 46 and the federal Minister of Labour Seamus O'Regan in Scarborough. Thank you to Dave Griffiths, Dan Shelley, and others at UA Local 46 for their hard work organizing and hosting the BBQ.

** UTIP

The government recently announced its intention to open the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP) to non-union organizations in the event that funding is not used up by union organizations. CBTU is deeply disappointed in this announcement, and we are working to try to ensure this doesn’t happen. In the meantime, we strongly encourage all our affiliate unions and locals to apply for UTIP funding.

Last week, I spoke to Warren Frey of the Journal of Commerce on a podcast about Canadian immigration policy and how it affects the construction industry amid labour shortages that we're seeing across the country. Letting unions co-sponsor new immigrants to boost the number of skilled tradespeople available could help address labour shortages and a need for more affordable housing. ** La fête du travail marque la fin de l'été
pour les métiers de la construction

C'est aujourd'hui le DERNIER jour des consultations gouvernementales sur les crédits d'impôt à l'investissement pour les technologies vertes, introduits pour la première fois dans l'Énoncé économique de l'automne 2022 et dans le budget fédéral de 2023.

Cette semaine, j'ai publié un article d'opinion dans le Daily Commercial News sur la façon dont le salaire dominant profitera à tous les travailleurs qualifiés pendant la transition du Canada vers une économie nette zéro. ** Fête du travail

La fête du travail est un jour important pour les métiers de la construction, car nous célébrons nos confrères et consœurs, le travail qu'ils accomplissent et notre longue histoire. Dans tout le pays, des défilés, des pique-niques et d'autres événements ont eu lieu le week-end dernier pour marquer la fête du travail. Les SMCC ont organisé un barbecue avec la section locale 46 de l'UA et le ministre fédéral du Travail, Seamus O'Regan, à Scarborough. Nous remercions Dave Griffiths, Dan Shelley et les autres membres de la section locale 46 de l'UA pour leur travail acharné d'organisation et d'accueil du barbecue.

Le ministre fédéral du Travail, Seamus O'Regan, et les députés John McKay et Salma Zahid ont assisté au barbecue de la fête du travail à Scarborough le week-end dernier, organisé par les SMCC et la section locale 46 de l'UA.


** PFIMS

Le gouvernement a récemment annoncé son intention d'ouvrir le Programme de formation et de l'innovation en milieu syndical (PFIMS) aux organisations non syndicales au cas où les fonds ne seraient pas utilisés par les organisations syndicales. Les SMCC sont profondément déçu par cette annonce et nous nous efforçons de faire en sorte que cela ne se produise pas. En attendant, nous encourageons vivement tous nos syndicats affiliés et nos sections locales à demander un financement au titre du PFIMS.

La semaine dernière, je me suis entretenu avec Warren Frey, du Journal of Commerce, dans le cadre d'un podcast, au sujet de la politique d'immigration du Canada et de son incidence sur le secteur de la construction dans le contexte des pénuries de main-d'œuvre que nous observons dans l'ensemble du pays. Permettre aux syndicats de parrainer de nouveaux immigrants afin d'augmenter le nombre de personnes de métier qualifiées disponibles pourrait contribuer à remédier aux pénuries de main-d'œuvre et au besoin de logements plus abordables.
