Oldham wheels out all the stops for Tour of Britain
Hundreds of people lined the sun-soaked streets on Sunday to watch some of the world’s top professional cyclists make their way through Saddleworth, Shaw, and Crompton for the Tour of Britain.
The race entered the borough in Saddleworth and zoomed through a packed high street in Uppermill, where supporters gathered in their droves to cheer on the cyclists. Spectators at Grains Bar were equally supportive as they chanted words of encouragement as the riders faced the challenging uphill cycle.
Shaw and Crompton were also abuzz even before the bikes arrived, with lots of craft activities taking place in High Crompton Park and George Street Skate Park and a visit from the Leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Arooj Shah.
Thank you to all our residents for supporting the event. We hope you had a great day!

Second scheme designed to improve safety around schools set to start
Oldham’s second School Street scheme is going live.
You may remember the borough’s first School Street was launched at St Anne’s Primary School, Royton.
Since then, it has proved a success and has received the backing of staff, parents, and pupils as well as the former Paralympic Gold medallist Dame Sarah Storey OBE, the Active Travel Commissioner for Greater Manchester.
From September 25 the latest scheme will start at Christ Church C of E Primary School, Crawley Way, Chadderton.
Currently, 52 percent of pupils walk to school. We hope that the figure will increase once the scheme gets started.
We will continue to work with other primaries, with more schemes set to pop up over the coming months.
