This week: 40th Anniversary of the Eighth Amendment (http://)

Caption: 100,000 Lives Saved by the Eighth Amendment

Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of the Eighth Amendment being inserted into the Constitution. Despite the sustained and slanted attacks it endured from the media through the years, it was a human rights inspired proposal that resulted in more than one hundred thousand people being alive today who otherwise would have had their lives ended through abortion.

The massive increase in the number of Irish abortions since the law changed in 2019 is further proof of the life saving effect of the Eighth Amendment.

The Irish Times and others may scoff at what it achieved and present a skewed and unfair picture to the public. As the Pro Life Campaign, however, we pay tribute today to the brave and sincere people who ignored the sustained personalised attacks and fought on to achieve a remarkable victory - a victory that remains a beacon of hope to this very day.
New report shows socio-economic abortion on the rise in the north of Ireland (http://)
A survey of 3,000 parents in the north of Ireland carried out by the group Melted Parents NI has shockingly found that parents have had abortions due solely to not being able to afford additional childcare bills.

82% of parents surveyed said the costs of childcare, which are the highest in Europe, has impacted their decision not to have more children. This includes many parents who additionally have considered abortion due to the rising costs.

The Pro Life Campaign has long highlighted the reality that the majority of abortions carried out are for socio-economic reasons, while abortions due to severe disabilities or risks to the health of the mother are a small minority. Yet the vast majority of media commentary on abortion has generally focused on these ā€˜hardā€™ cases, overlooking the reality of the situation.

In the PLCā€™s 2023 Pre Budget Submission, we proposed several pro-family and pro-life schemes which have helped to reduce the abortion rate elsewhere. In Hungary for example, the abortion rate dropped dramatically due to the introduction of policies designed to help and assist families and parents expecting a new baby.

In order to proactively reduce the abortion rate, the government must begin to tackle the socio-economic roots of abortion. This latest report from the north of Ireland devastatingly points to the reality that many people feel they have no choice other than to have an abortion. This should never be the case.
Thousands attend March for Life in London (http://)
An estimated 7,000 marchers attended the annual March for Life in central London on 2 September, despite train strikes disrupting the plans of many more prospective attendees.

Pro-life marchers came together to march from Westminsterā€™s Emmanuel Centre to Trafalgar Square, where they voiced their opposition to the current abortion regime in Britain which permits abortion up to 24 weeks gestation. The March which passed through the streets of the capitol, filled Parliament Square for the speeches. The 2023 theme of the event was: ā€˜Freedom to Liveā€™. One really noticeable thing at the march, as with similar events in Ireland, was the large contingent of young people present.

Like Ireland, there have been an increase in the number of abortions in England and Wales recently. Figures released for the first half of 2022 show there have been 123,219 abortions ā€“ an increase of 17,731 abortions, which represents a 17% increase from 2021.

The successful event shows that for a huge amount of people the abortion issue is far from ā€œsettledā€. Organisations like Right to Life UK have worked tirelessly to shine a light on the negative social impact of abortion and to raise awareness of the need for pro-life legislative change in politics.

Congrats to the organisers of March for Life UK for the huge success of the event and for the public witness they are displaying in standing up for life.
Abortion doctor admits switching to euthanasia work after abortion work dried up (http://)

A Canadian doctor has admitted switching from performing abortions to assisting people end their lives, after euthanasia was legalised in her country.

In a blasƩ fashion, Dr Konia Trouton told a documentary produced by The Telegraph which aired last week that after the abortion drug Mifepristone became available in Canada her "skills and need for doing surgical abortions was limited" so she changed to helping people end their lives under the new euthanasia regime instead.

In the documentary (which to date has close to 3 million views on YouTube alone), every sentence uttered by Dr Trouton is crammed full of sanitised terms like "abortion care", "social justice" and "reproductive rights". Yet, nothing she says can veil the horror of what she does.

She calls for all remaining restrictions on euthanasia in Canada to be lifted and casually and chillingly says: "I have dealt with a number of situations in assisted dying where there has been a priest present and we have together formally ended that person's life."

Our annual National Conference this year will take place on Saturday, 14th October 2023 in the RDS Concert Hall, Dublin 4.

The main theme of the conference is 'Growing the Pro-Life vote, Bringing about change at election time' and underlines our focus on getting more public representatives elected who will speak up courageously for human rights, for the right to life of unborn children and for care and support for women in unplanned pregnancy.

The keynote speaker for the National Conference is Obianuju Ekeocha.

Obianuju Ekeocha is a highly respected and well known pro-life advocate on the international stage. She has 135,000 followers on Twitter (X), which gives an indication of the reach and impact she is having. She is the founder of Culture of Life Africa, an initiative dedicated to improving maternal healthcare services for women, while fighting against Western governments who commit vast sums of money for abortion and population control in African countries - something she appropriately describes as "ideological colonisation".

Seating for the event is limited - so donā€™t delay, register today below to attend the conference!
Stay tuned for updates on speakers in the coming weeks but for now, click below to register. See you there!

Humanity Campaign - Action alert! (http://)

With the Oireachtas adjourned for the summer, it presents a perfect opportunity to approach your local TDs and Senators and urge them to reintroduce some humanity into the debate on abortion. The Three-Year Review, a seriously flawed process which produced a one-sided and extreme report, will be considered by politicians in the autumn. Itā€™s important that we take action over the summer.

We have produced a quick and easy Virtual Postcard for you to sign, which will automatically send an email to your local TDs. Use the button below to navigate into your county on our website and find your constituency.

Itā€™s also important to have meetings with your TDs. These can be as simple as dropping into your local TDā€™s advice clinic to outline your concerns. Click below to register to lobby your local TDs. Donā€™t worry ā€“ weā€™ll help you every step of the way with advice on making the appointment to points you might consider raising.

We are heartened by the number of people actively involved and interested in meeting their politicians to express their views. The People Before Profit Bill which regrettably passed at 2nd stage of the DĆ”il on 31st May must also be countered. Even the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, has said this Bill goes far beyond the recommendations of the Three-Year Review ā€“ which are already extreme in their own right.

During Summer 2023, it is crucial to engage with our politicians and remind them not to overlook the referendum promises. We need to fight to ensure our abortion policy is aimed at reducing the abortion rate.

Please take a moment to get involved in the
Humanity Campaign ([link removed]) . Remember even the smallest effort will make a big difference.

Thank you!

Do you have pro-life material which could be historically relevant? (http://)
We are putting out a call for anyone in possession of any documents, photographs, correspondence, etc. relevant to the Irish pro-life movement throughout the decades. We are particularly keen to receive anything in your possession related to periods such as the 1983 referendum. A comprehensive history of the pro-life movement is yet to be written, but the historians of the future will need primary sources. We are asking for people to get in touch with the Pro Life Campaign (mailto:[email protected]) if they possess such material (no matter how old or dusty!) to ensure it is preserved now and not lost to the ages.
