Mexico’s Moment
Mexico’s governing party chose Claudia Sheinbaum, a former mayor of Mexico City, as its candidate in next year’s presidential election, creating a watershed moment in the world’s largest Spanish-speaking country, with voters expected to choose for the first time between two leading candidates (the opposition’s candidate is Xóchitl Gálvez) who are women, as the NYT reports.

Record Shattering Heat Everywhere
During this summer of dangerous, record-shattering heat, almost no one on Earth escaped climate change-fueled temperatures. Researchers from climate research group Climate Central found that between June and August, 98% of the global population—7.95 billion people—experienced high temperatures made at least twice as likely by climate change, as CNN reports. |

A bunch of you also wrote me about the Scorsese film of The Band’s last performance with its original members, “The Last Waltz.” There were so many outstanding performances during this show by The Band and their famous friends. And the concert footage was captured with a dramatic flair that I don’t think has ever been equaled. It’s hard to say which is my favorite part of the film—The Band with Muddy Waters, The Band with Van Morrison, and The Band with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell stand out.
