During a July virtual roundtable, our Research Team (Lauri Torgerson-White, Sasha Prasad-Shreckengast, and Jenna Holakovsky) introduced our community to their current investigation into whether rescued farm animals can experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The behind-the-scenes glimpse into this transformative work prompted insightful and thought-provoking questions — some of which we didn’t have time to answer during the live roundtable. Research & Sanctuary Animal Welfare Senior Manager Sasha thoughtfully compiled responses, including what consent looks like for animal participants.
Our newest New York sanctuary residents’ lives began in animal agriculture before finding a safe space at Lollypop Farm (Humane Society of Greater Rochester). As Lollypop Farm looked to expand capacity for animals rescued from cruelty, they contacted us to take in Cocoa and Valentine. We are grateful to be part of this duo’s journey.
New York and California sanctuary tours received TripAdvisors' 2023 Travelers' Choice award! While our sanctuaries are healing spaces for rescued farm animals, they often heal and change the lives of visitors, too. During hour-long tours and weekend B&B stays, visitors meet and learn about the lived experiences of the survivors who call Farm Sanctuary home.
This year, we placed Dottie, Freckles, and Patches — a sheep family from a larger herd rescued from neglect — in a loving home in Florida. Our Farm Animal Adoption Network team continues working with the herd’s rescuer to find loving homes for the entire herd. In August, we began another transport to place a family of five sheep in their new home at Peaceful Fields Sanctuary.
For youth ages 13-18 interested in creating a more just and sustainable food system, our Youth Leadership Council (YLC) provides community and connection with like-minded students nationwide. YLC’s orientation meeting will be on Sunday, September 17, but we’ll continue to accept applications through October 15.
Sanctuary is a place, a mission, a way of life, a state of being. By wearing this tee, you support a place of peace for thousands of rescued farm animals as well as transformative educational programs and advocacy efforts.
During this one-hour conversation, hear about the inspiring and surprising lives of our rescued residents like Earl (pictured above), better understand our similarities, and ask questions to the incredible staff responsible for animal care and education.
Celebration for the Turkeys is a treasured Farm Sanctuary tradition in honor of turkeys and well-loved for its sanctuary time, shared experiences, and, of course, incredible vegan food. This year, the celebration will be held at our Watkins Glen, New York sanctuary on Saturday, November 4, and at our Acton, California sanctuary on Saturday, November 18.
Farm Sanctuary fights the disastrous effects of animal agriculture on animals, the environment, social justice, and public health through rescue, education, and advocacy.
