John, students across the Hudson Valley are headed back to the classroom this week, ready to face the challenges and opportunities of the 2023-24 school year.

As a graduate of East Ramapo public schools, I understand firsthand the transformative power of education. Growing up in Section 8 housing and on food stamps, public education was my only ticket to opportunity. It paved the way for me to get involved in politics and attend Stanford University and Harvard Law.

A high-quality education is the pathway to upward mobility and the backbone of a healthy, functioning democracy. That’s why I helped pass the American Rescue Plan Act, which brought hundreds of millions of dollars to schools throughout New York’s 17th Congressional District. It’s also why I introduced the Strength in Diversity Act to fund equity and inclusion programs in our schools, and pushed for over $3.6 billion in funding for public schools most in need right here in New York. But there’s so much work left to do to ensure our schools, including in East Ramapo, live up to the promise of this country. That’s why I will always be a fierce defender of a high-quality education for every student.

But I’m not done fighting. As students head back to school, add your name to join me and call on Congress to defend public education, fund mental health services, expand universal pre-K programs, and more so that every student—no matter what zip code they’re in—has the opportunity to succeed.

It’s no secret the GOP is hellbent on dismantling our public education system. This year, the House GOP proposed legislation to gut critical programs for low-income students and students with disabilities, and tried to block student debt relief for millions of borrowers.

And last month, Republican presidential contenders went on stage calling for the elimination of the Department of Education entirely.

The path to success for millions of young people depends on access to a high-quality education, and I refuse to stand by and watch an extremist GOP continue to strip away that opportunity for our children and students.

Add your name to the petition to call on Congress to defend our public schools from these extremist attacks and protect the right to a high-quality education for every child today.
