An increasing number of Americans believe that President Joe Biden may have been involved in overseas business activities that have ensnared his son Hunter in felony charges and funneled millions of dollars to other family members. Republicans are characterizing this as one of the most audacious abuses of White House power in history. According to a CNN poll, 61 percent of Americans think President Biden was somehow connected to Hunter's lobbying efforts on behalf of foreign companies like Burisma in Ukraine and Bohai Capital in China, both of which have faced controversy. The president vehemently denies any involvement in what he calls "shake down" communications between Hunter and his foreign associates. Only 38 percent of the 1,500 respondents in the poll believe that Biden had no role in these matters. House Republicans have been conducting investigations into the Biden family since taking control of Congress this year and have revealed significant findings from their inquiries. For example, they obtained testimony from Hunter's business partner, Devon Archer, indicating that then-Vice President Biden was involved in numerous meetings with foreign business partners. One of the most notable instances involved executives from Burisma seeking Hunter's help in using his influence with the White House to alleviate pressure related to a corruption investigation in Ukraine. Subsequently, documents revealed that Vice President Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion in economic aid to Ukraine, and shortly thereafter, the prosecutor investigating Burisma, Viktor Shokin, was fired. In another case, President Biden wrote a letter of recommendation to an executive at Bohai Capital, who later provided substantial financial support to Hunter and his consulting firm. The public's perception of President Biden's involvement in these matters is far from uniform. A majority of Americans, including independents, believe that he has not been entirely truthful in his categorical denials. Additionally, 55% of the population views Joe Biden's stance on the Hunter Biden investigation as "inappropriate." Despite the partisan divide on this issue, House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) continue their efforts to gather evidence, including subpoenaing bank records and calling potential witnesses, possibly even members of the Biden family, as they seek to uncover the extent of the president's involvement.
