Dear John,

This week on The Other 80 podcast, Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil joined Claudia Williams to discuss how states use Medicaid, the keys to successful implementation of whole person health care for greater community impact, and missed opportunities to understand and solve for the roots of inequity.
Cost Sharing For Hospitalizations
In their new article in the September issue of Health Affairs, Sneha Kannan and her coauthors examine trends in commercially insured patient cost sharing for hospitalizations with and without intensive care.

After examining millions of hospitalizations, they determine that average cost sharing increased by 34 percent between 2008 and 2019, an increase driven by increasing deductibles.

Kannan and coauthors also find that ICU admission was associated with $155, or 13 percent, higher cost sharing than cost sharing in non-ICU hospitalizations. High deductible plans and the receipt of out-of-network care were associated with higher cost sharing.

Kannan and coauthors conclude that these findings could suggest that commercially insured patients are "largely protected from hospitalization price growth at the point of care."
