Enhanced Wildfire Safety Resources for the Construction Industry
CHBA BC

While it has been a busy summer for construction across B.C., many people and projects have been impacted by wildfires. In response, the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) has developed updated resources for working in smoky and hot conditions — as well as protecting construction sites from wildfires.

BCCSA's new resources include a guide to developing an Exposure Control Plan (ECP) for worksites experiencing wildfire smoke and Managing the Health Risks of Poor Air Quality During Wildfire Season in B.C., which details the health effects of wildfire smoke.

You can review all BCCSA's fire safety resources here.

Falling 'Dominoes': Nanaimo Latest B.C. Municipality to Ban Natural Gas Heating in New Homes
The Province

New homes in Nanaimo won't be allowed to have natural gas as a primary heat source as of July 1, 2024. It's the latest B.C. city to jump ahead of the province's "zero-carbon" goal.

Along with Nanaimo, where the ban will come into effect July 1, 2024, Saanich and Victoria are also early adopters of the step code, while Whistler, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Squamish and Port Coquitlam have taken steps to combat emissions from new buildings.

The bans are controversial, with some saying they reduce resilience in an emergency, and others arguing they are one of the best ways to reduce municipal emissions. You can read more in this article from The Province.
