Another wave of journalism layoffs was just announced—this time at
CityLab, the award-winning news site founded by The Atlantic to focus on
the unique challenges faced by cities.

CityLab was bought out just three months ago by Bloomberg News, and they
already announced that half the staff is being laid off.

These layoffs are just the latest example of the crisis in journalism
that is threatening our very democracy.

Common Dreams will never be bought out by a corporation. We are
nonprofit and accept NO corporate advertising.

Over the last decade, half of the news room jobs in America have been
eliminated.

Hundreds of newspapers have been shut down, and virtually every
journalistic outfit in the country has seen dramatic reductions in
staff.

At the same time, public trust in journalism is in steep decline. It's
no wonder, considering just five major media conglomerates own 90% of
the news outlets in America, and the most prominent television news
sources are Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC.

The most important way to counter the corrosive effects of the corporate
media is to support independent, nonprofit journalism, like the work we
do at Common Dreams.

And the only thing that protects us from painful layoffs like at CityLab
