Celebrating Strides in Education Justice

AQE's Champions of Education

New York City

Hi John,

This September, we're celebrating a major achievement: all New York schools will start the academic year full funded for the first time. Thanks for the hard work and your steadfast support!

Join us on Thursday, October 5, from 5:30 to 8:30pm ET at the Manny Cantor Center to mark this historic victory. Let's pay tribute to those who've tirelessly supported New York's students and contributed to our shared progress.

One of the evening's honorees will be Marian Adams Bott, an education justice advocate and lobbyist, dedicated to improving school finance polices and championing equitable education opportunities. Known for her pivotal work on the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE) lawsuit, which aimed to achieve fairer school finance policies in new York State, Bott is a cherished longtime friend of AQE.

From her Kansas roots to her impactful work in New York today, Bott's commitment to public schools led her to Washington, D.C., where she contributed to the Task Force on School Finance, designing federal programs to bridge resource gaps between states. Then, after relocating to New York, she became a vital member of the New York Junior League, advocating for resources and educational projects.

In 1999, she passionately supported the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE) lawsuit, taking on a decisive role as an Educational Priorities Panel (EPP) lobbyist in Albany to improve New York State's school finance policies.

The CFE lawsuit served as a catalyst for the development of the Foundation Aid formula in New York. Today, it reflects the necessary ongoing efforts to ensure that all New York public schools receive the funding necessary to provide a high-quality education for their students. To learn more, read our recent report, “Moving New York Toward Educational Equity”, outlining the journey that resulted in fully funding Foundation Aid for twenty-five historically underfunded districts. It's a milestone, but not an endpoint to creating a truly equitable educational landscape.

Join us in celebrating the unwavering dedication to educational justice by Marian Adams Bott and her peers, as we gather to commemorate this significant victory and set our sights on the enduring transformation we're all working towards.
