In what is sadly to become a familiar tale, environmental and community groups are suing the state of Utah for failing to save the Great Salt Lake from irreversible collapse. For years, the state stood by and did nothing as more and more water was diverted away to irrigate farmland, feed industry, and water lawns, even as a megadrought accelerated the lake's demise. Unless Utah takes decisive action ASAP, the lake could be gone in five years, exposing a dusty lakebed laced with arsenic, mercury, lead, and other substances. The resulting toxic dust bowl would be “one of the worst environmental disasters in modern US history," according to one ecologist.
