Dear John,
We all know Donald Trump has promised he will ban Iranians from the U.S. once again if he wins the White House. 1
Now, his former Iran Envoy Elliott Abrams is proposing a ban against Americans from traveling to Iran, citing North Korea as his model. 2
Abrams says Americans should face years of imprisonment if they try to visit Iran with a U.S. passport. He ominously says that for Iranian Americans traveling on an Iranian passport, this can impose "a deterrent effect."
Nobody knows the risks of traveling to Iran better than Iranian Americans. The Iranian government's detentions of Iranian Americans as political pawns is abhorrent and terrifying. But we know that most Iranian Americans have family in Iran and a significant number choose to visit Iran. No government, whether Iranian or American, should threaten us with jail time to prevent us from being able to see our loved ones.
We will not allow this proposal to come to fruition, whether through legislation in the halls of Congress, or on the road to the White House.
That's why we are gearing up for 2024 NOW. Please stay tuned for further updates on our efforts to fight this proposal and others like it, as well as our plans to register and educate Iranian-American voters, and to endorse and help elect Iranian- Americans and allies to office. And if you support these efforts, please consider rushing a donation today so we have the resources to do this work. [[link removed]]

Jamal Abdi
