Dear John,
Today, Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness - the lead organization in the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters - and ten local businesses and four conservation groups, WON the lawsuit in which the groups and businesses had intervened on the side of the United States government. Antofagasta’s mining subsidiaries Twin Metals Minnesota and Franconia Minerals filed the federal lawsuit in August, 2022 seeking to force the renewal of terminated mining leases, prospecting permits, and a mine plan next to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Twin Metals’ lawsuit was an attempt to revive its rejected plan to build a dangerous sulfide-ore copper mine along rivers, lakes, and streams that flow directly into the Wilderness. We are so heartened that today Judge Cooper dismissed Twin Metals’ anti-Wilderness lawsuit. We fought tooth and nail to prevent Twin Metals from reviving its toxic mine project, and won, thanks to the tireless efforts of our outstanding legal team at Morrison & Foerster. |
