Hear for yourself what moms are thinking and feeling when faced with a crisis pregnancy.

Hi John,

When a mom suddenly finds out that she is facing an unexpected pregnancy, she often feels a flurry of emotions. The following journal entries will give you a sense of what a mom in this situation is thinking and feeling as she considers an abortion. I hope you’ll take a minute to read these and understand more about the moms you’re serving through your lifesaving support.

“Shelley” had recently moved to Texas to advance her career. After ending a relationship with her boyfriend, she discovered she was pregnant. Her thoughts were spinning out of control:

*“How could this be happening? I feel so alone, with no one to help me decide what’s right for ME!! I can’t do this… I can’t have a baby; I’ve worked too hard to get where I am in my career. I can’t give it up… not now!”*

She quickly decided on an abortion. And in her journal, she wrote,

*“I need to just get it over with and move on! I’ll get an abortion and be done with this.”* **

But in Texas, abortion was illegal. In a panic, she searched online for an appointment and found the number to Human Coalition’s national contact center. She called and spoke with a compassionate nurse who told her, “We’re here to support you… we have your back!”

After talking with the nurse, she wrote:

*“Man… Talking with the nurse was so encouraging. Maybe I can do this??* ** *I’ve always wanted to be a mother… but what about my job?”* **

Still confused, Shelley decided to drive several hours to a Planned Parenthood in a neighboring state. While in the abortion procedure room, and only moments from aborting her baby, she saw a metal garbage can. The cold reality of throwing away her child’s life changed her heart.

Again, Shelley processed what she was thinking:

*“I can’t imagine throwing away my child’s life ... It’s just not that simple anymore. How could I ever think that an abortion would fix anything?

The support I felt on the phone at the other clinic is what I need more of. With some support I know I’m not alone in this. That’s why I walked out of Planned Parenthood. I know it’s going to be hard to raise my child, but I still feel so free!”*
