🗝️ REPORT: Keeping the Faith Could Unlock 171K Acres for Affordable Housing!

Someone holding a SB 4 sign

SB 4 (Wiener), the Keeping the Faith for Affordable Housing bill, would simplify and streamline the process for faith communities and nonprofit colleges to build affordable housing on their land, but what would be the impact?

A new report by the UC Berkeley Terner Center for Housing Innovation finds that these organizations own a significant amount of land that would be eligible for SB 4 incentives and that could be used for affordable housing. Specifically, 171,000 acres (nearly 5 times the size of Oakland) of potentially developable land owned by faith-based organizations or non-profit colleges would be eligible for affordable housing streamlining under SB 4.

Help Us Pass SB 4 & Other Bills Last week, SB 4 (Wiener) and SB 423 (Wiener, Wicks, Grayson) passed out of the Senate Committee! Now, we need your help to get these bills across the finish line: send in support letters before the September 14 deadline.

Shift the Bay’s New Renter Storybook! 🏘️

Renter storybook

One thing we know for certain: renter protections keep families in their homes. One of the most compelling tools we have to illustrate the power of overly-complicated or abstract housing policies is… storytelling! NPH has recently released their Renter Storybook, in partnership with Shift the Baywhich highlights three human-centered stories that demonstrate why our ability to thrive depends on the stability, health, and safety of our homes.

This project is a collaborative effort of the 2022-23 Shift the Bay renter protections subcommittee (convened and supported by NPH) including: San Francisco Foundation, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment Action (ACCE), Bay Rising, North Bay Organizing Project (NBOP), Monument Impact, Public Advocates, Urban Habitat, and Working Partnerships USA (WPUSA).

NPH Says “Farewell” To Peggy Lee!

After 16 years with NPH, our Deputy Director Peggy Lee is transitioning out of her position with the organization. Peggy’s institutional knowledge of our industry and warm, welcoming personality will be deeply missed. Peggy has a few thoughts to share with you all as she completes her transition from NPH:

Dear affordable housing colleagues and friends,

September 1st was my last day at NPH and looking back at the 16 years I spent here, I am so grateful for all of you. So many of you so generously shared your knowledge and wisdom, as well as your friendship and camaraderie on my journey. I am so proud of the work I got to do at NPH and the opportunity that I got to do that with all of you.

After supporting NPH during an incredibly exciting period of growth, I will be taking some time off to reflect. I continue to believe in the centrality of home to housing and racial justice and I hope to still contribute to that in some way in the future. I'm excited to see what's next for NPH and the affordable housing community and look forward to crossing paths with you in the future.

We’ll miss you, Peggy! Stay tuned for more information about our new Deputy Director in the coming weeks.
