Hi John,
In yesterday’s Energy Bill debate, Tory rebel Chris Skidmore MP laid out clearly that “legislating to leave the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), that penalises nations for not maintaining investments in fossil fuels, simply ensures the UK follows the rest of Europe in doing so.”

While his Exit-ECT amendment was not picked for a vote, thanks to the efforts of Global Justice Now supporters like you, a set of MPs from all of the four main parties put their name to it, demonstrating support from across the political spectrum to get us out of this dangerous deal.

The government has been forced to respond to this pressure: just a few days before the debate, it announced it will review the UK’s membership of the ECT, and consider leaving if modernisation proposals aren’t agreed by November this year.

This is a major breakthrough in the campaign: we have forced the government to change its tune, address the modernisation’s ‘mpasse’ and set itself a deadline.

This treaty is not popular

Alongside this parliamentary pressure, we released new polling showing that public opinion is firmly onside with the campaign to exit this climate-wrecking treaty. We found that less than 1 in 10 of the UK public believe the UK should remain in the ECT.

Our polling also found that almost 3 in 4 (74%) believe it’s a problem the ECT clashes with government policies and climate goals, and only 17% that it’s okay for companies to sue the UK government in private international courts rather than British courts.
